Who may participate in this grant?
Any K-12 teacher in Region VII (Fresno, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Kings and Tulare counties).   Teachers have to complete an application by Feb. 1, 2006 to participate in the grant beginning in August 2006.

When are applications to participate due?
February 1, 2006.

What are the four professional development aspects of the grant?
Teachers may participate in one or all of the following:

  • MA Program – Up to 20 teachers will complete an MA in history (30 units) with a teaching option through CSU Fresno.  Requirements/Time Involvement:  Three hours per week course attendance, three-five hours per week course work for three years.  Participation in beginning of year day-long grant meeting.   Compensation: Teachers committing and selected for the MA program will be compensated 50% of the unit cost in years 1 and 2 and 75% unit cost in year 3.  Teachers not wanting to complete the MA, but take a few courses may take the course at a reduced unit cost, but will not be compensated.

  • Colloquia – Up to 30 teachers per year may attend quarterly presentations and interact with history scholars and a historical theme author, based on the yearly theme over a Friday/Saturday (12 hours per colloquium).  Requirements/Time Involvement:  Teachers register for all four colloquia offered Friday and Saturday (see grant calendar for specific dates).  Up to five hours of colloquia work between each colloquia (online discussion board, reading of materials, writing lesson plans, use of online resources, etc.).  Participation in beginning of year day-long grant meeting.   Compensation:  Friday – sub days; Saturday - $25 per hour for attendance and related work. Sub days provided by grant and district. 

  • Seminars – Up to 60 teachers per year may attend monthly history scholar presentations based on the yearly theme (Two hours once a month, generally on Thursday afternoon/evenings).  Total of seven seminars each year.   Requirements/Time Involvement:  Teachers register for all seminars at beginning of year, but may attend any number of seminars.  Up to two hours of applying knowledge from seminar in classroom between seminars.  Compensation:  $25 per hour for attendance and related work.

  • Summer Travel Study – Up to 40 teachers may attend a summer six-day content driven, scholar guided professional development experience traveling to Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Birmingham organized around each yearly theme (Third of fourth week of June each summer).   Requirements/Time Involvement to Participate:  Member of MA cohort or participants in quarterly colloquia are eligible to attend.  Development and teaching of lessons based on travel study experience.   Compensation:  Cost of travel, lodging, and entry fees of trip covered by grant.  

When and where will the Masters courses be offered?
In general, they will be offered one class per week for three hours.  Courses will be at CSU Fresno.  MA participants will be part of a cohort and will have some flexibility in which night the class will meet.

How are the MA courses, colloquiums and seminars related? 
They all follow a similar yearly theme.  MA cohort members will be encouraged to attend colloquiums and seminars.  Colloquium teachers are required to attend all colloquia.  Seminar teachers may attend one or all seminars.  Teachers may attend both colloquia and seminars.

Are teachers paid?
Teachers in MA cohort will have part of the fees paid for the MA courses (50% of unit cost in Year 1 and Year 2 and 75% of cost in Year 3).  Teachers who attend colloquia or seminars will earn $25.00 per hour for attending provided they have registered ahead of time (The total amount will be paid on June 1 of each year).

What are the requirements to be in the MA  program?
First, teachers must commit to completing the MA program between August 2006 and July 2009.  Other requirements include:

  • Complete the online application to CSUFresno by April 1, 2007 – www.csumentor.edu.  Need to provide official transcripts. Application Fee:  $55.
  • Take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) test – or submit your current scores (Cost: $105). 
  • Teach history as a separate subject on a weekly basis consistent with the state history/social science framework and standards depending on grade level. 
  • Complete the MA course work with a minimum grade of B in each course
  • Commit to serving in the history/social science field in a school, district or county office in Region VII for at least two years after receiving the MA degree
  • Attend the beginning and end of year day long “TAH Meeting” (school pays for one sub;  grant pays for one sub.)
  • Take the teacher pre and post history knowledge test each year
  • Have one period or class of history students take the pre, first semester, and post history knowledge test and the pre and post history interest survey each year
  • Identify a colleague who will be a “control group” teacher not involved in the grant who will take the teacher content pre and post test; administer the pre and post student knowledge test to one group of students.  (Stipend available)
  • To utilize online “Web Lessons” and other grant online resources for teaching

 How will teachers be chosen for the MA program?
Teachers must submit the grant application prior to February 1, 2006.  Teachers will be chosen based on application, region, need, commitment and selected by the grant program implementation team – composed of 13 members including people from each county.

When and where will the colloquia be offered? 
In general, they will be offered during a Friday/Thursday in October, January, March and April each year.  The plan is to have colloquia video-conferenced out to two locations so teachers may attend in any of three locations.  Main location will be in Fresno County, with video conference facilities to the north and south.  

What are the requirements to be in the Colloquia Series?
First, teachers must commit and register to attend all four colloquia during one year.  Each series of colloquia are specific to each school year.  (See the detailed calendar for each year’s theme).  Other requirements include:

  • Attend all four Friday and Saturday colloquia throughout the year (see calendar for dates).
  • Teach history as a separate subject on a weekly basis consistent with the state history/social science framework and standards.  (Library Media Teachers may meet this requirement by agreeing to collaborate with history/social science teachers on a weekly basis)
  • Complete colloquium related readings and lessons
  • Attend the beginning and end of year day long “TAH Meeting” (school pays for one sub;  grant pays for one sub.)
  • Utilize online “Web Lessons” and other grant online resources for teaching
  • Take the teacher pre and post history knowledge test each year
  • Have one period or class of history students take the pre, first semester, and post history knowledge test and the pre and post history interest survey each year.
  • Identify a colleague who is willing to be part of the “control group” teachers not involved in the grant who will take the teacher content pre and post test; administer the pre and post student knowledge test and history interest survey to one group of students each year.  (Stipend available)

 How will teachers be chosen to attend the colloquia?
Teachers must submit the grant application prior to February 1, 2006.  Teachers will be chosen based on application, region, need, commitment and selected by the grant program implementation team – composed of 13 members including people from each county.

When and where will the seminars be offered?
In general, they will be offered Thursday afternoon/evenings from 4:30-6:30 pm in September, October, November, January, February, March, and April.  The plan is to have the seminars video-conferenced out to two locations so teachers may attend in any of three locations.  Main location will be in Fresno County, with video conference facilities to the north and south.  

 What are the requirements to be in the seminar program?
Teachers need to register to attend seminars at the beginning of the school year.  There will be a total of 7 seminars each year – they will be broken into two sets so that a unit of credit may be earned by teachers to apply towards professional development and/or NCLB compliance points.  Teachers may attend one or all of the seminars.   Registered teachers need to attend beginning of year day-long meeting – sub day paid by grant.

How will teachers be chosen to attend the seminar?
Any history teacher in grades K-12 may attend.  Teachers who register ahead of time will be eligible for reimbursement from the grant.
